Volunteer with Citizen Schools in 2012 and make a difference in the lives of under-privileged middle school students at the Normandin Middle School!

Citizen Schools is in the final stage of recruitment for Citizen Teacher volunteers to build students’ skills and fuel their imaginations by teaching their passions and expertise to middle school students in New Bedford. Sign up now to teach what you know and love to kids!

Citizen Schools is a national nonprofit that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day and increase opportunities for low-income children. Citizen Schools is currently recruiting volunteers to teach 12-week hands-on apprenticeship courses that build students’ skills and fuel their imaginations in a variety of subjects from architecture to robotics, theater and web design.

Volunteers will receive up-front training, weekly lesson-plan support, and a Citizen Schools staff member in the room with you each week to help your teach your 90-minute lessons to 15 students each week. There are many full curriculum for you to choose from and your staff partner will help you develop engaging lessons for kids. The semester will culminate in a WOW! display of your students’ achievement in front of parents, peers and the community.

Timeline: The program begins now with training and continues through mid-May with two school breaks in between (total of 10 weeks of teaching) plus the exciting WOW! event.

Volunteer opportunities are available Mondays or Thursdays 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. You select the day and the topic that work for you and your 15 middle school “apprentices” will grow tremendously from your teaching and support!
